First Year Summer Students

Description of first year summer program: Our summer program is designed to provide first and second year law students with a solid introduction to the practice of law and the culture of Bennett Jones LLP. Summer students get real file work, meet clients, get involved in deals and go to court - they do not spend their whole summer in the library writing memos. Summer students are welcomed to the firm with a weeklong in-depth orientation program and are paired with associate mentors. As a group, the students engage in many social and team building activities. We also have a strong continuing legal education program that is designed to build both technical and practice management skills.

Articling Students

When do you hire articling students? June of each year in accordance with the Rules of the Law Society of Alberta
Do you still have any articling positions open for this year (starting 2024)? No
Do you anticipate having articling positions open for next year (starting in 2025) for external candidates outside of your current student hires (if any)? Yes

Do you allow students to work during the licensing process in your jurisdiction? Yes
Description of articling program Students half their Articles in our advocacy department (focusing on general litigation matters, commercial litigation, construction litigation, medical malpractice, occupational health and safety laws, administrative/tribunal work, bankruptcy and insolvency and labour and employment), and half their Articles in our business department (focusing on mergers and acquisitions, securities, banking, structured finance, real estate, construction law, energy law, transportation law, technology and IP).
Comments If students are doing a 12-month in-firm article, they complete the 8-month PREP program concurrently. If students do the Accelerated PREP Program, they complete that program over ~3 months and then do ~9 months in-firm to complete their Articles.

The Firm decides year-to-year whether students do the 8-month PREP program or the Accelerated PREP program.

Summer/Articling

Do you accept applications for summer/articling positions from foreign trained students/lawyers? Yes
If yes, do applicants need to have an Assessment Report from the National Committee on Accreditation (in Québec, an attestation from le Barreau du Québec) before applying? Yes
